Where does garbage in Sonoma County get landfilled?

On Sept. 8, 2010, Central Disposal Site reopened. About 50% of Sonoma County’s garbage is now being landfilled locally. The remaining 50% is trucked to a landfill 80 miles away. Looking at the overall waste stream, it is estimated that about 70% of what people throw away could be recycled reducing the burden on the environment and on ratepayers.

There are five County Refuse Disposal Site owned by the Sonoma County Department of Transportation and Public Works for disposal of garbage from Sonoma County residents and businesses.  For your convenience, recycling is provided at all sites free of charge. In addition, Central Disposal Site, Healdsburg Transfer Station and Sonoma Transfer Station offer free drop-off for reusable items. As landfill bans are enforced, you must separate your materials for recycling when self-hauling your materials to Disposal Sites. Pack your vehicle efficiently to save time and money.

Disposal sites will be closed on Sundays, New Year’s Day, July 4^th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
